Old russian icons
Since the emergence of Christianity in the 10th century,
icons, "holy pictures", are honoured in Russia. People express their sorrows
to them and seek hope and guidance through them.
Saint Georgij, for instance, is the patron of warriors and the hermits Makarij,
Onuphrij and Peter from Athos are idols of an ascetic life.
Icons offer a view beyond a temporal, worldly existence into a pending eternal
world. Thus people regard them as "windows to heaven".
